Dhieu Juac is the co-founder of this foundation and originator of the College Education Initiative project that’s aimed at funding further education of high-achieving South Sudanese high school graduates. Dhieu is one of the Lost Boys of Sudan, from the Southern Sudan region, who departed from his home town of Paliau due to civil war in the country. He travelled several miles to the neighboring country of Ethiopia and then to Kenya where he was able to emigrate to the United States of America.
Dhieu received his bachelor’s degree in accounting and with a minor in economics from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. He currently works for the Interstate Hotels as an accountant at Hilton Arlington Hotel and he is pursuing his master’s degree at University of Maryland University College. Dhieu has been performing a lot of voluntary services to his South Sudanese communities as a treasurer of The South Sudanese Community in the Washington DMV metro area since 2015. Moreover, he served as the vice president of the Ajuong Community since May 2012, and is now the president of the Ajuong Community serving since May 2018. In addition, Dhieu serves as the chairperson of the Twic East Community members in the DMV area. In July 2011, Dhieu visited South Sudan to witness the Independence of that newly freed country when he realized that the South Sudanese children and high school graduates, from poor families and backgrounds, needed significant help to continue their education.

Deng Juac is the key spokesperson for the SSCF board. As a survivor of the genocide that took place during the Second Sudanese Civil War, Deng is one of the Lost Boys of Sudan. After walking 1,000 miles at the age of 11, across hostile terrain and with very little to sustain him and his group, Deng arrived at the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya six months after leaving his father in pursuit of an education. There, he ardently pursued his goals of literacy and English language proficiency by attending the makeshift school during the day with the children and returning again at night to attend with adults. The united nation, sponsored by a Christian Church group, brought him to the US approximately six years later.
Deng received his High School diploma from Yorktown and started College in the fall at Northern Virginia Community college. Deng later received his associate’s degree from Northern Virginia Community College and he is now looking forward to complete a bachelor’s degree in the near future. Deng returned to his village in the winter of 2010 to vote in the historical referendum for southern independence, and the video of his return and of the conditions at the current school (children gather under trees) led to the organization of this nonprofit to raise the funds necessary to fulfill his dream of providing a better life for the children in his homeland.
